Professor Ulrich Ruediger, Professor S K Sopory, and Professor Colin Riordan (Left to Right) celebrate the signing of the Global Alliance agreement.
Professor Ulrich Ruediger, Vice Chancellor of the Universitaet Konstanz, Professor S K Sopory, Vice Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Professor Colin Riordan, signed an agreement that forms the core of the Global Alliance. Having worked together separately in the past, the three universities have now entered into a trilateral agreement that will now govern activities involving all three partners.
During 2011 activities between Essex and JNU have continued to develop, with visits in both directions by both academics and PhD students, workshops in both Delhi and Colchester, and new initiatives underway involving the Essex Business School and in Science Policy to add to the already extensive list of collaborations.
Essex and Konstanz have launched a joint funding initiative for pump-priming collaborations. Three projects have been funded in the first round. The successful applicants were Kristian Gleditsch and Gerald Scheider (The Micro-Dynamics of the Arab Spring: Testing Refined Models of the Protest, Repression, and Democratization), Carlos Carrillo-Tudela and Leo Kaas (Labour Market Search and Policy Applications”) and Annette Jaeckle and Katrin Auspurg (Factorial Surveys - studying decision making and generating empirically-based methodological guidelines). There will be a further call for proposals in early 2012.
Essex is currently in the process of signing up two more Global Alliance members, the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, regularly ranked in the top three of Latin American Universities, and the University of Botswana, which offers wonderful opportunities for research, education, and student mobility in Africa.
