The Department of Language and Linguistics hosted a workshop on Case and Elicitation on the 13th and 14th June that involved participants from three Global Alliance universities: the University of Essex, the University of Konstanz and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. Following on from a number of earlier meetings and workshops in Delhi, Konstanz and Colchester, this was the first time all three universities have been involved in joint activities. A further conference is to be held in Delhi in November.
Funding for the faculty visitors was secured from external sources, including the ESRC, the Indian Council for Social Science Research, and the British Academy. The event also provided an opportunity for a PhD student from JNU to visit Essex as part of an Essex TALIF project that is exploring the use of technology to support international teaching collaborations. The workshop on this occasion included both remote participants and remote presentations.
Pump-priming funding remains available for the development of academic activities with our international partner universities. The University will be launching new programs for projects between the Universities of Essex and Konstanz and between the Universities of Essex and Botswana, at the beginning of July.
Alongside the Linguistics workshop, the Department of Sociology through the Centre for Research in Economic Sociology and Innovation, is currently hosting a visiting academic and PhD student from the Centre for Science Policy at JNU as part of one of the University’s four Global Challenge projects.
